Sarah Fortner grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and received a bachelor's degree in Art Practice from UC Berkeley in 2000. She moved to New York City in 2001 to join Hunter College's Master of Fine Art program. Fortner currently resides in Orange County, NY where she founded the Washingtonville Artist Collective in 2014 and became the Executive Director of the Wallkill River Center for the Arts, a non-profit arts organization in Montgomery, NY in 2018.
Fortner works in diverse media, including oil painting, works on paper, photography, mixed media sculpture, and digital media. Her works explore themes of nature, domesticity and storytelling finding a balance between rich detail and minimalist compositions. Fortner says, " Art is about life; its subject is our thoughts, emotions, and senses. At its best, art reveals something new to the viewer, refreshing something familiar, finding symmetry in chaos, or a new perspective on an issue, anything which deepens our experience of life."
Sarah Fortner is a graphic designer, producing patterns and illustrations for textiles and product applications under the name Quiet Morning Studio. Fortner also creates branding and commercial design elements such as logos, web graphics and print products for clients. Photography is ann important element of Fortner's design and art practice.
